i wrote my first short story - a submission for verena tay's balik kampung 2, a collection of short stories about place. the criteria for submitters was that they have lived in one place for at least a decade.
i also discovered that i am not very good at prose. if writing begins with imitation, i clearly have not been following the hemingways and orwells, or even the woolfs and joyces... no, i think my style draws on the glorious tradition of ferrell, rogen and apatow. sigh. i suspect i might suffer the ignominy of being rejected from a collection i was invited to submit to...
one wonders: is it literature if you're trying to be funny?

after banging on for a few hours and gathering links from across the internet to re-spruce up this dusty old corner of my life, i discovered scrollkit - basically a what-you-see-is-what-you-get web editor for people too busy to learn code. i scrolled on to a couple of sample sites and hey, i've always wanted to do the whole-website-on-one-page,just-scroll-on thing, complete with parallax scroll and sexy graphics.
(for example, check out the most awesome police website in the world.)
then i realised that me + css/html/php/java = nothing, but me + internet sandbox (scrollkit) = scary 1990s geocities-style website with flashing banners and psychedelic colors, so i should probably stick to me + weebly template for the foreseeable future.
though it would be nice to combine poetry with good web design. too often poetry online = blank white wordpress/blogger template, or cheesy geocities-era repositories with liberal use of comic sans MS. (in loving memory of geocities, here is the geocities-izer, a tool to make any webpage look like it was made by a small child in 1995).
though of course i suppose the children of 2030 will look back at our tumblrs all decked out with animated gifs and bizarre cartoon memes, and think, ew, so 2010s.
*2 hours later*
...surface from history of internet memes, not having done any work
decided to lump all my cross-genre creative stuff together on this website.
- there's a new 'music' tab which describes my dabbling with musicals and a cappella, complete with a ton of youtube links.
- there's a new 'graphic novel' tab with like 20 words and a link to some pictures.
- also i dropped most of what i could recall of my poetic resume + links in the 'poetry' tab, if you want to find free chunks of poetry scattered across the internets.
a singaporean poet with an unhealthy addiction to forms.
